April 2009

… not to forget the waving boat tourists and the guy who stopped at the red light, got out of his truck and started to “mark his territory” … at the red light.

The third day of principal shooting has passed and 30 shots are done. Not a bad yield with such a crappy weather. Well, I mean I don’t dislike the sun per se, just don’t break through the clouds when I am shooting. Please? And the complete opposite … rain … I mean why, just why? Or traffic. Why do I have to loose three hours alone just to get through the city? Why does everybody seem to take his car out for a spin, just when I am in a hurry? And what about that traffic policeman, giving me the evil eye when I was clearly doing nothing wrong. But that’s my fault. I often forget that this is bizarro town, where it is ok to pass the red light doing 80 km/h, but little girls jaywalking get fined.

Anyhow, there were some good things, too. Did I mention that 30 shots are done? I did, huh? Well I also talked to Ronny for half an hour, who was hitchhiking to Amsterdam, after coming from Sofia by plane. And I quite enjoyed the friendly greetings of those 50 tourists, who passed by on their boat. My girlfriend assists me now in the afternoons on the set, which is very handy. It’s easier than trying to pursuade a tripod with a folding ruler for a head to move a bit to the left. However, the crazy Catlady who was walking around confused, didn’t quite seem to like me. Well, you can’t have everything.

So I started to prepare my equipment today, because the weather starts to be nice … and that’s not what we want.

Since the project will be in cinematic 2.35:1 widescreen, I was trying to come up with something to cover the screen. I kinda hurried it, but thought it would be good enough (it never is when you start trying to convince yourself it might be). So I ended up with two covers for my screen made of clear duct tape and post-it notes. Why two? Because the position of the picture on the LCD does not match when you are in record mode and in play mode. During the shooting I directly found out that I needed the possibility to often switch between those two covers, because when you shoot alone you constantly do the following things: set up camera -> test picture with myself in it -> adjust camera -> test picture with me in it … and so on.

After spending 20 minutes with some scissors, razors, a ruler and a magazine of my girlfriend (of course just to shred it in a manly way), I ended up with this:

letterbox01
(the aftermath and the old covers)

letterbox02
(new cover - record mode)

letterbox03
(new cover - playback mode)

Sadly, after having a cloudy day, the weather was just turning sunny one hour after arriving at the spot. So I could only do some tests:

With the renewal of the film I decided to improve the meshes of the characters. Below are examples of Jake (the lead character). Modifications were applied to the head (general face structure; wrinkles to be driven by the facial rig), the eyes (just some improvements, including adjustable irises), the hands (getting rid of the thin feel of the fingers) and the feet (toes … yeah!!!!!).

Left side = old mesh | Right side = new mesh

Welcome!

Hello and welcome to this humble blog, which is dedicated to document the renewal of my graduation project “Waiting For Yesterday”.  Due to some circumstances, a lot of what was originally planned could finally not be done and the rendering pretty much sucks. Therefore this movie is not really finished.

So what will be renewed? Everything!!! The models will be refined, the rigs updated, the animation will be completely overhauled, simulations, renders, etc.

Here’s a little excerpt of “Waiting For Yesterday v1.0″ (I like to refer to it as “Blueprint”)
