Shooting

You are currently browsing the archive for the Shooting category.

Alrighty! So during the last days we have finished 90% of the necessary shots to be filmed/photographed. That means that only one scene, which has about 5-7 shots, needs to be taken care of.

So what’s the verdict of shooting background for CG?

  1. If you need a specific weather for the shoot and you have a camera on standby and readily available, make sure that everything is prepared, so that you can run to your set and start shooting.
  2. Doing your shoot alone can be a bitch. Try to get a friend to help as a stand-in and/or assistant … it really helps a lot. Having somebody else on the set also eases your mind, because you won’t always have to keep an eye on the equipment.
  3. Try to relax… You will realize that many things are out of your control when you shoot in public. You might have to wait easily half an hour to get the right moment for your shot. So take an MP3 player or a book with you  ;o)

(this is really just a small fraction of things to keep in mind and applies to traditional shooting as well)

Next to that my friend Sebastien is busy sculpting the details for the characters and texturing them. I might soon be able to show something. And I have also completed the new blocking of the film. The new length of the film is now about 6 minutes net (so without titles and credits). A small extract can be seen here (I will update these shots when I get to work on them):

And some more useless stuff:

me
(me and my trusty stand-in tripod on the left)

ducks
(ducks are attention whores)

… not to forget the waving boat tourists and the guy who stopped at the red light, got out of his truck and started to “mark his territory” … at the red light.

The third day of principal shooting has passed and 30 shots are done. Not a bad yield with such a crappy weather. Well, I mean I don’t dislike the sun per se, just don’t break through the clouds when I am shooting. Please? And the complete opposite … rain … I mean why, just why? Or traffic. Why do I have to loose three hours alone just to get through the city? Why does everybody seem to take his car out for a spin, just when I am in a hurry? And what about that traffic policeman, giving me the evil eye when I was clearly doing nothing wrong. But that’s my fault. I often forget that this is bizarro town, where it is ok to pass the red light doing 80 km/h, but little girls jaywalking get fined.

Anyhow, there were some good things, too. Did I mention that 30 shots are done? I did, huh? Well I also talked to Ronny for half an hour, who was hitchhiking to Amsterdam, after coming from Sofia by plane. And I quite enjoyed the friendly greetings of those 50 tourists, who passed by on their boat. My girlfriend assists me now in the afternoons on the set, which is very handy. It’s easier than trying to pursuade a tripod with a folding ruler for a head to move a bit to the left. However, the crazy Catlady who was walking around confused, didn’t quite seem to like me. Well, you can’t have everything.

(what a wondeful and rare specimen; and yes, he really was peeing)

So I started to prepare my equipment today, because the weather starts to be nice … and that’s not what we want.

Since the project will be in cinematic 2.35:1 widescreen, I was trying to come up with something to cover the screen. I kinda hurried it, but thought it would be good enough (it never is when you start trying to convince yourself it might be). So I ended up with two covers for my screen made of clear duct tape and post-it notes. Why two? Because the position of the picture on the LCD does not match when you are in record mode and in play mode. During the shooting I directly found out that I needed the possibility to often switch between those two covers, because when you shoot alone you constantly do the following things: set up camera -> test picture with myself in it -> adjust camera -> test picture with me in it … and so on.

After spending 20 minutes with some scissors, razors, a ruler and a magazine of my girlfriend (of course just to shred it in a manly way), I ended up with this:

letterbox01
(the aftermath and the old covers)

letterbox02
(new cover - record mode)

letterbox03
(new cover - playback mode)

Sadly, after having a cloudy day, the weather was just turning sunny one hour after arriving at the spot. So I could only do some tests:
