Ok … maybe a bit lame as a headline, but the best I could come up with right now … sue me ;o)

The promised teaser is finally there … and online … and on it’s own website. “Dude!”, you might say, “Where can I see this awesome teaser of yours?”
Well let me tell you:

1. Open a browser of your choice
2. Make sure you have Flash 10 installed
3. Enter “www.waiting-for-yesterday.com” in your adress bar
4. Hit “enter” and enjoy

Alternatively you could just click here.

P.S.: we currently have openings for writers who can make my blog posts funny

Hi there,

me again. It’s time to show some new stuff. Though I haven’t gotten past the 30% of finished animation yet, doesn’t mean that productivity has come to a halt. Now that the waters outside of the project have calmed a bit, I can show some of the progress.

Jake has a more detailed skin now thanks to Zbrush (well, more thanks to Sebastien who spent many many hours sculpting) and also the shading and textures have reached a state which is closer to the final look (though officially still work-in-progress)

And Jake also has some hair now … same here, work-in-progress.

That’s it for now. Stay tuned for a first teaser to be released (hopefully) soon!

Circumstances

There haven’t been any updates lately, sadly. The last two weeks have been rather busy outside of the project. Havin said that, 30% of the film have been animated … to me that sounds like progress.

Let’s hope the next weeks will bring a bit more positivity.

P.S.: I had to disable commenting on the posts, because I am getting several spam comments per day and quite frankly it goes on my nerves.

Listen up!

Sooooooooo, I’m back from my hopefully last shooting. Even in Germany I was at the mercy of the weather. And almost every time, about 30 minutes after arriving at the location, the sun started shining. The remaining 6 shots are now on my hard drive (there are now 64 in total) and I can continue with the other stuff. Tonight will be used to animate again. I was planning to do some little render tests and play around with some HDRI related stuff, but I have something much better. My friend Clement, who is composing the score for the movie, has sent me a great preview clip. So I thought it might be interesting to share this.

Ok now … back to pushing splines!

Tonight will be just a little update, because I will go to sleep now. Tomorrow I’m leaving for Germany, because there I will shoot the final scene (in the film the first) on a beautiful graveyard.

My 8mm fish eye lens arrived this week as well and I already did some HDRI shoots. Will do some rendertests soon.

Here’s a little progress excerpt:

and this was the blocking

scn06_sht03-06_Blocking from wfyfilm on Vimeo.

Alrighty! So during the last days we have finished 90% of the necessary shots to be filmed/photographed. That means that only one scene, which has about 5-7 shots, needs to be taken care of.

So what’s the verdict of shooting background for CG?

  1. If you need a specific weather for the shoot and you have a camera on standby and readily available, make sure that everything is prepared, so that you can run to your set and start shooting.
  2. Doing your shoot alone can be a bitch. Try to get a friend to help as a stand-in and/or assistant … it really helps a lot. Having somebody else on the set also eases your mind, because you won’t always have to keep an eye on the equipment.
  3. Try to relax… You will realize that many things are out of your control when you shoot in public. You might have to wait easily half an hour to get the right moment for your shot. So take an MP3 player or a book with you  ;o)

(this is really just a small fraction of things to keep in mind and applies to traditional shooting as well)

Next to that my friend Sebastien is busy sculpting the details for the characters and texturing them. I might soon be able to show something. And I have also completed the new blocking of the film. The new length of the film is now about 6 minutes net (so without titles and credits). A small extract can be seen here (I will update these shots when I get to work on them):

And some more useless stuff:

me
(me and my trusty stand-in tripod on the left)

ducks
(ducks are attention whores)

… not to forget the waving boat tourists and the guy who stopped at the red light, got out of his truck and started to “mark his territory” … at the red light.

The third day of principal shooting has passed and 30 shots are done. Not a bad yield with such a crappy weather. Well, I mean I don’t dislike the sun per se, just don’t break through the clouds when I am shooting. Please? And the complete opposite … rain … I mean why, just why? Or traffic. Why do I have to loose three hours alone just to get through the city? Why does everybody seem to take his car out for a spin, just when I am in a hurry? And what about that traffic policeman, giving me the evil eye when I was clearly doing nothing wrong. But that’s my fault. I often forget that this is bizarro town, where it is ok to pass the red light doing 80 km/h, but little girls jaywalking get fined.

Anyhow, there were some good things, too. Did I mention that 30 shots are done? I did, huh? Well I also talked to Ronny for half an hour, who was hitchhiking to Amsterdam, after coming from Sofia by plane. And I quite enjoyed the friendly greetings of those 50 tourists, who passed by on their boat. My girlfriend assists me now in the afternoons on the set, which is very handy. It’s easier than trying to pursuade a tripod with a folding ruler for a head to move a bit to the left. However, the crazy Catlady who was walking around confused, didn’t quite seem to like me. Well, you can’t have everything.

trucker
(what a wondeful and rare specimen; and yes, he really was peeing)

So I started to prepare my equipment today, because the weather starts to be nice … and that’s not what we want.

Since the project will be in cinematic 2.35:1 widescreen, I was trying to come up with something to cover the screen. I kinda hurried it, but thought it would be good enough (it never is when you start trying to convince yourself it might be). So I ended up with two covers for my screen made of clear duct tape and post-it notes. Why two? Because the position of the picture on the LCD does not match when you are in record mode and in play mode. During the shooting I directly found out that I needed the possibility to often switch between those two covers, because when you shoot alone you constantly do the following things: set up camera -> test picture with myself in it -> adjust camera -> test picture with me in it … and so on.

After spending 20 minutes with some scissors, razors, a ruler and a magazine of my girlfriend (of course just to shred it in a manly way), I ended up with this:

letterbox01
(the aftermath and the old covers)

letterbox02
(new cover - record mode)

letterbox03
(new cover - playback mode)

Sadly, after having a cloudy day, the weather was just turning sunny one hour after arriving at the spot. So I could only do some tests:

With the renewal of the film I decided to improve the meshes of the characters. Below are examples of Jake (the lead character). Modifications were applied to the head (general face structure; wrinkles to be driven by the facial rig), the eyes (just some improvements, including adjustable irises), the hands (getting rid of the thin feel of the fingers) and the feet (toes … yeah!!!!!).

Left side = old mesh | Right side = new mesh

Welcome!

Hello and welcome to this humble blog, which is dedicated to document the renewal of my graduation project “Waiting For Yesterday”.  Due to some circumstances, a lot of what was originally planned could finally not be done and the rendering pretty much sucks. Therefore this movie is not really finished.

So what will be renewed? Everything!!! The models will be refined, the rigs updated, the animation will be completely overhauled, simulations, renders, etc.

Here’s a little excerpt of “Waiting For Yesterday v1.0″ (I like to refer to it as “Blueprint”)
